Tribute: Garth Boomer

Image: Garth BoomerGarth Boomer's life was a triumph, his contribution extraordinary, his premature death in 1993 a huge loss. While many English teachers in Australia may not have met Garth, some not have read his work, and a few not even have heard of him, his influence remains present and powerful - and impacts on virtually all our classrooms, so deeply did he influence the shaping of curriculum and pedagogy in Australia. I believe the validity and virility of his thinking to be such that it must retain currency.

This page is an ongoing tribute to our past President and great educational thinker and writer. They are committed, as Garth was, to the cutting edge of developments in English teaching and learning.

Pedagogy was Garth's driving focus. His writing captures a seminal revelation of action and reflection for teachers of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Some will be published here: we will always have a paper of Garth's on site and will rotate through them. To accompany Garth's own work you will find the kind of new material on current and emerging issues that is reflecting and shaping the future of what we teach, learn, assess and contribute to the total learning and curriculum of our nation's children.

These pages are committed to Garth's favourite words and impulses: exploration and discovery, challenge and celebration, risk-taking and criticism, curiosity and achievement. Roll up your intellectual sleeves and dip your inquiring minds in here!

TEACHERS ON LINE: The Garth Boomer Program Resource For Teachers

TEACHERS ON LINE provides teachers with information and advice about how ACTF programs can be used to support and enhance students' learning. All ACTF programs have an underlying educational basis, making them ideal classroom resources. Lively, interesting and rich in content, these programs ensure a high level of student engagement and encourage a solid exploration of diverse issues and situations.

Each program is aimed at children, offering different levels of understanding and relevance for different age groups.

The TEACHERS ON LINE activity sheets suggest classroom teaching activities for English and Studies of Society and Environment. Teachers can select teaching activities appropriate to their student's level through a number of different paths:

English

  • program title
  • topic
  • outcomes from the Reading and Viewing Profile
  • read the nationally agreed Curriculum Profile for Reading & Viewing (Curriculum Corporation 1993)

Studies of Society and the Environment

  • program title
  • topic
  • outcomes from the Society and Environment Profile

This resource also allows you to:

  • obtain the synopsis and production details of ACTF titles
  • search TEACHERS ON LINE using a query engine
  • contact the TEACHERS ON LINE team
  • go to the ACTF Home Page

The TEACHERS ON LINE program resource was developed through the Garth Boomer Scholarship and is funded by both the Commonwealth Government and the South Australian Government.
